Post-Doctoral Fellow
Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute
Hello, let me introduce myself..
My name is Amanda Godbold, and I am a conservation paleobiologist investigating how ecological communities assemble, persist, and reorganize across space and time. My research explores metacommunity dynamics and the factors that shape biodiversity across spatial and temporal scales, with particular interest in how these patterns shift with scale. I aim to identify the conditions under which ecosystems recover following disturbance versus reorganize into new states, and whether these alternative configurations can sustain comparable ecological and societal functions. By examining marine ecosystems from the Paleozoic to the present, I use the geological record as a natural laboratory to link past environmental change with the processes driving modern ecosystem resilience and transformation. My goal is to advance process-based, data-driven research that reveals the mechanisms underpinning biodiversity and informs strategies for addressing contemporary environmental challenges.
Professional Goal
I strive to secure a position that fosters my insatiable curiosity through meaningful and impactful research while encouraging continuous growth both professionally and personally. I value opportunities that challenge me to expand my knowledge, refine my skills, and contribute in innovative ways.
Equally, I am deeply committed to mentorship and cultivating an environment where others can thrive. Empowering individuals to discover their passions, develop their talents, and achieve their aspirations is a cornerstone of my professional purpose. I am eager to contribute to a culture of collaboration and growth, where advancing knowledge and supporting others go hand in hand.

How to get involved
I've compiled a list of remarkable organizations providing a variety of engagement opportunities, spanning from educational resources to involvement in hands-on data collection.
CoralWatch combines worldwide coral health monitoring with educational and public outreach efforts, fostering reef awareness through user-friendly and captivating tools.
For over two decades, NOAA Coral Reef Watch employs various data sources in a decision support system, assisting global stakeholders, including resource managers and researchers, in addressing coral reef stressors due to climate change.
WCS Canada employs a distinctive combination of field-based scientific research and policy initiatives to safeguard wildlife throughout Canada.
The National Ocean Service furnishes data, tools, and services to safeguard ecosystems, bolster climate resilience, and promote economic sustainability.
The Ocean Agency has devised a distinct approach to expedite backing for action—a formula designed to evoke not only awareness but also concrete steps. They term it Impact Science Communication.
The Ocean Portal, part of the Smithsonian's Ocean Initiative, works with the Sant Ocean Hall and Sant Marine Science Chair to promote public understanding and stewardship of the ocean.
